In its collections, the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna cultivates numerous species that are endangered or at risk of extinction in the wild. As far as possible, this is done in such a way that the plants can later be reintroduced into its natural habitat. Apart from tropical orchids, plants from the arid regions of eastern Austria are a major focus of the collections of endangered species.
